My buddy Nelson just dropped a new YT video that features me dropping my FJR1300 (and myself).  I simply didn't get the kickstand all the way down.

It's a pretty good video that was taken mainly on the Cherohala Skyway with our YZF600R group.  Enjoy!

  2003 FJR1300 maintenance and upgrades.
Posted by: Reserector - 03-05-2023, 08:03 PM - Forum: Mods and Projects - Replies (1)

Between yesterday and today I knocked out all of the maintenance on the rear of the FJR1300.
Tire.  Brakes.  Drive shaft lube.  Added t-stems and TPMS system.
Swapped to a later model OEM shock assembly to get a better spring rate.
Also swapped to a short-throw shift arm from an R1.
So many improvements!  I can't wait to do the front!  It will be like a whole new, more spirited machine.  :-)

Had a good test ride!  It's starting to feel like a sport bike SHOULD.
I took off, smacked the clutch and the front came up quicker and higher than ever.  The new shock transfers the power!  I need to relearn it, now.[Image: b4e98d899133e44e8e26f7e3a713d7da.jpg][Image: f5a4834dcd4a2d4558a28c1be6c9ca32.jpg][Image: 6ed0a7b62f90f45c0342dee2bd5bb7a1.jpg][Image: 8ec8911f2c32a82f993ef076d03a7bb9.jpg][Image: 3e15a0aa40c0c1afc7a0707e45bf1717.jpg][Image: 9a164e09e813d6fc35da69a66a46e6c0.jpg][Image: 38aca15ae5f18e9d1294e288974bc88e.jpg][Image: 97c7591c9fc35fe1e81b53b38cd97686.jpg]

  Campground Cougar

I rewarded my FJR by taking it camping. I usually take a bicycle, but I was visiting Archusa Creek Waterpark campground, which I had never been to.
I saw it as an opportunity to go see nearby Clarkco State Park which i also had never been to, but only if I could take a motorcycle.
I camp in my scratch-built truck camper, so that creates...limitations.

That plan was the inspiration for my recent trailer refurb/refit. You see, I had already tried hauling my DRZ400S on a front-mounted hitch carrier, but I had to abandon that idea. Once I saw it, I deemed it preposterous.

The refitted trailer worked flawlessly. The FJR and I are at Archusa as I write this.

I have the whole week off, so I was able to pick which two days I wanted based on weather. It was above 60F today and should get above 70 tomorrow.

The first evening, I spent some time roaming the campground on the bike. Just getting familiar and saying hello to other campers. But it felt weird. The bike felt like a cougar slinking quietly along, eyeng the people who thought they were in a hooligan-free zone. And me, knowing just how fierce it truly is. Like having powers that I dare not reveal. Bwahahaha!

This morning I explored on foot.

After lunch it was around 65F. Time to unleash the beast and go see Clarkco State Park. It felt good to grab some throttle on the highway!
When i reached the park, I did the same slow, nearly-silent prowl through that park as well, but this time the cooling fans kept coming on every few minutes. It was a warm day, boys! It sure felt good after that cold snap. Smile

Back at Archusa:

Not sure what I want to do tomorrow. Maybe some hiking. Maybe another ride if I can pick a destination.

Sunday Ride in the national forest
Posted by: Reserector - 11-20-2022, 07:51 PM - Forum: Rides and Events - No Replies

Lots of hunters out, so we kept to the gravel roads. We most likely won't ride trails until spring.
It was a brisk 40°F. It got pretty chilly above 40mph. Pretty day, though.

Trip to the Lynard Skynard memorial
Posted by: Reserector - 10-23-2022, 01:59 PM - Forum: Rides and Events - No Replies

My oldest son and I joined up this Saturday with the Laurel Freedom Riders chapter of the CMA (Christian Motorcyclist Association). I was on my FJR1300 and Dustin was on his Harley Pan America.

It was a fellowship ride to the Lynard Skynard memorial near McComb.

The weather was clear and 50° but got up over 80° that afternoon.
We rode miles of boring slab, but this is a great group of people, the destination was cool, and lunch itself was not the usual.

The memorial stands along a rural road about a thousand yards from the actual crash site where the band's charter plane went down on October 20th, 1977.

I was blessed with the opportunity to meet two men who were there on that fateful day.
Mark Howard, one of the survivors of the crash, was the lighting contractor for the band. He stepped by on his way back to Texas.
That's him on the left. I'm on the right.

Bobby McDaniel is a local who was among the people who made their way through the woods to the wreckage to rescue survivors.
That him on the right.

We ate lunch at The Dinner Bell. Southern cooking served on a lazy Susan table. It was perfect for our group.

Then we rode a ton more slab to get back home.
